Whole Bean vs Pre-Ground Coffee

Shardor Conical Burr Coffee Grinder

The debate between whole-bean coffee and pre-ground coffee comes down to saving time and money vs quality. Do you have the time every morning to grind up coffee (I know it only takes 10-15 seconds), and do you have the money and counter space to buy a separate grinder as well as the brewer of your choice for your daily cup of joe? Not only that, but ground coffee as a whole actually comes out cheaper than whole bean, so you have that going for it as well.

With all that going against it, why do people still opt for whole beans? Well, I can tell you why I go whole bean and nothing but whole bean, and that is because it gives you flexibility. See, I love me some coffee, and I love tinkering with it from different brew styles, grinds, and even the temperature of brew. The ability to grind your beans to the coarseness that different brew styles require is a must if you're going to be working out which brew style is the one for you.

Now let's talk about the flavor and freshness. Did you know that 15 minutes after grinding your coffee, you will lose a good chunk of its aroma, which is an important component of the overall flavor. This is why I grind my beans fresh for every brew, just so you can really taste the bean! So when it comes to pre-ground coffee or whole bean, ask yourself, do you have the time and money to spare to make a great cup of coffee, or are you just looking for a quick kick of caffeine and don't really want to worry about all that?

Shardor Conical Burr Coffee Grinder

Removable Upper Burr

The Shardor Conical Burr Coffee Grinder is a slick little coffee grinder made out of an all-black plastic and what looks like stainless steel with a foggy plastic grinding chamber that has a rubber stopper for pregrinding before use if you need to do that. The grinder is a smaller appliance that is 7.87"L x 4.72"W x 11.81"H, so it doesn't take up too much room.

It's sleek black and stainless steel look will go with just about any kitchen, so you don't have to worry about that, however, there are no other color variations, so just keep that in mind when you want to purchase this one. The bean hopper comes out at 8.5oz, which is a decent size, though I would like to have it a little bit bigger. Right at the neck of the hopper, you have the grind selection, which gives you 35 different grind settings. Then you have the quantity knob that lets you choose anywhere from 2-12 cups of coffee.

First Impressions

Shardor Quantity Knob

The Shardor Conical Burr Coffee Grinder is a very user-friendly and straightforward grinder that has a very sleek and clean design. The bean hopper can carry 8.5 oz of beans, which I do not care for. I wish it had a little more capacity because I grind with it every day, so I have to refill it every 3-4 days. I can see them manufacturing it like that so that the beans won't linger in the hopper for longer than a few days to keep the beans at a certain level of freshness.

The grind settings are located at the neck of the hopper, and it provides 35 different grind levels to choose from. With all these grind levels to play with, you can find the perfect grind with a little trial and error for the brew method you're using. Shardor even has some guides placed on the grind level wheel

that will help you decide where to start, and those are espresso, drip pour over, and French press.

Using these guides, I have found that my grind level for my brew method of choice (Chemex) is 25, which is on the coarser end of the drip pourover guide. However, that is where I find that my coffee tastes the best, so that's where it sits until I try a different brewing method (which I do frequently).

The knob quantity lets you set it between 2-12 cups so you can get just the right amount of coffee you need. This grinder also gives you the option to turn off the grinder in two different ways and those are both done with the quantity knob. One of those ways is by taking the knob and spinning it to where it says off, and the other is much easier and that is by pressing the power on button in the center of the knob again while it is running.

I know it says it has an anti-static technology, but I was still pleasantly surprised when I pulled out the grind chamber and saw how well it worked. It didn't have any grinds stuck to the side, which I saw as a waste of grinds, and I always tried to clean those out so I could use them in the brew. I don't know how they got that to work, but whatever they did, I really enjoy using it!

The cleaning is easy as well you just have to wait till the hopper if empty then you twist the hopper out, pull out the removable upper burr, then take the brush that is located on the inside of the hopper lid and brush out the bottom burr and the upper burr. The Shardor also comes with what looks like a straw brush, and that is for cleaning out the coffee chute, so you may want to hold on to that little thing. Once you do that, you should take the bean hopper and the grind chamber out and give them a good hand washing, then leave them out to dry. Take a damp cloth and wipe down the body and wait for the rest of the components to dry, then reassemble, and you're good to go!

The Good & The Bad

Bean Hopper

The Good:

  • Uniform Grinds- I love that this grinder gives you a very uniform grind, which makes the brew come out more consistent.

  • Anti-Static Technology- This is a feature that surprised me how well it did, you no longer have to worry about making a mess or missing out on some of that grind!

  • 35 Grind Settings- with this many grind settings to play with, you will be able to find the one that fits your brewing style, no doubt!

  • Grinding Chamber With Plastic Stopper- I personally don't use this, but it is nice that they added this just in case.

  • Quiet- This grinder is quieter than most, but by no means quiet, and my partner says she finds it way quieter than my previous one.

The Bad:

  • 8.5 Bean Hopper- I would love a bigger one so I wouldn't have to fill it up every few days.

Now this next con is something that I haven't tested yet because I don't have an espresso machine, but it's something I heard through the grapevine and something I feel like y'all should know if you're looking into purchasing this one, so take it with a grain of salt:

  • Espresso Grind- The espresso grind that comes out of this grinder is a little too coarse, causing the espresso pour not to have enough pressure while brewing.

Final Thoughts

Shardor Logo

The Shardor Conical Burr Coffee Grinder is great at doing what it's supposed to do and to be honest, I haven't noticed anything other than a great uniform grind when using it. The 35 grind levels and the 2-12 cup quatity knob both allows you the flexibility to try just about any brew method till you find the one that best resonates with you. The anti-static technology is an excellent addition and helps tremendously with keeping everything neat and usable.

When I think of who would be the best customer for this grinder, I would probably go with anyone from beginners to intermediate in the art of the brew, because once you get past those levels, you have those super expensive machines that may or may not be worth it hehehe, I haven't bought one yet set I can't really tell you. I think that you can't go wrong with using The Shardor Conical Burr Coffee Grinder for just about all your coffee grinding needs!
