Agogo Pour Over Coffee Maker

In my never-ending quest to find the best cup of coffee I can produce at home, I came across The Agogo Pour Over Coffee Maker. I got it in the diamond form which I thought looked the most pleasing to the eye. The Agogo Pour Over Coffee Maker came with a reusable stainless steel filter, a cleaning cloth, a cleaning brush, as well as the carafe itself. On a side note if you don't want to use the reusable filter you will have to buy some Chemex filters with it.

How I Use This Brewer

Before we get to how to brew your coffee let's talk a little bit about the filters for Chemex. This filter comes pre-folded into a square and the way you use them is by taking one fold and separating it to one side while the other three are separated the other way. You then position the 3-sheet side against the stem of the carafe for the brewing process. It's kinda weird but once you do it you'll see what I mean. Let me talk you through how I use this brewer:

1. Prepare the filter

2. Heat up clean crisp water with a gooseneck spout kettle (if you have a kettle with a thermometer you should take it off the heat at 195-205 F, if you do not have a kettle with a thermometer then just wait for it to boil and set it to the side away from a heat source for a couple of minutes)

3. Once you get your water hot in the kettle pour a little of it into the filter to prepare it for the brew cycle, pour it out once it settles to the bottom. While you're doing that go ahead and grind up your coffee (medium coarse).

4. Set your timer to 4 mins and once your water is at temp, hit the timer and start pouring in the water in a slow smooth fashion for about 30 seconds then let it bloom for another 30 seconds

5. You then go back to pouring the water on top of the grounds it should take about 3 more pours to almost the top of the carafe and take another 3 minutes ( If it brews a little faster than the 4 minutes allotted then your grind may be a wee bit too coarse and if it takes a little longer it could be a wee bit too fine of a grind, just food for thought). While you're pouring make sure to break up the larger clumps of coffee with the pour.

6. After those three minutes pull out the filter with the coffee and throw it away.

Make it your own

If you have ever tried a Chemex before and looked up how to do it.....There are some very technical ways to brew with this style of brewer. From weighing it on a scale while brewing to how long your brew should last and how many pours you're supposed to do, because of that it's very easy to get lost down the rabbit hole and forget you are trying to make the best coffee for you. That comes with a lot of trial and error and I would definitely recommend writing down what you do along the way. So don't be afraid to mix and match and try different things because when it comes down to it it's all about how it tastes to you. However, once you figure out how to make it work for yourself to give you the best cup of Joe for your own taste buds, it's a route worth going!

How Does The Coffee Taste

Agogo Pour Over Coffee Maker brewing

The pour-over Chemex-style coffee brewer always gives me a crisp robust flavor without all the sediment that you will get with the good old-fashioned French press (my favorite style of brew). I find it fits somewhere between the drip coffee machine and the French Press when it comes to flavor. If you enjoy the French Press style coffee you should really give this pour-over brewer a try.

The Good and the bad

Agogo Pour Over Coffee Maker Side View

The Agogo Pour-Over Coffee Maker has a lot of features going for it but before we go there let's look at the negatives that comes along with it shall we? First off this can be a very technical way of brewing coffee, from the time allotted to how many pours you're supposed to go through.... it's just a lot and may sway some people completely away from this style of brew. Another issue some may have is that once you brew it you gotta use it because there is no way to keep it warm, so you just gotta get used to brewing what you are going to be able to use at the time. The Last Negative I'm going to go over is that this brew process needs a lot of attention and for you to do a lot of the manual work, for those 4 minutes you are very much a part of that brewing method....which matter how you look at it could be a positive as well, if you don't mind it that is.

Now off to the positives! The Agogo Pour Over Coffee Maker is so easy to clean and get rid of the coffee grounds all you gotta do is lift the filter out then throw it away and rinse it out the carafe. This style of brewer though it is very technical gives you a lot of control on the brew process, so much so that you can tinker around with it to get it just right. The flavor of the coffee that it gives is superb and I've always liked to use a light/medium roasted coffee when I'm using this brewer for the flavor, but that may just be my preference. The price of The Agogo Pour Over Coffee Maker compared to the original Chemex is unbeatable and worth a look as well.

Conclusion

In conclusion, if you never tried a Chemex but enjoy the taste of a French Press you should really give The Agogo Pour Over Coffee Maker a try. It may take you a little time and tinkering before you get this style of brewing down pat but once you do it'll amaze you. The price that this brewer comes in at is also a great reason to give it a try. I love my little Agogo Pour Over Coffee Maker and will be one of my go-to methods of brewing for those days of relaxation!
