First Impressions

Razor Basilisk V3 front view

The Razer Basilisk V3 is very sleek and has an ergonomic build, especially with the thumb rest that gives this mouse that added support and comfort. The cord that is connected to the main body of the mouse is very light and gives no movement or drag. The buttons on the V3 have a very audible click sound as you're using it, and you can really feel the Optical Mouse Switches Gen 2 working because I haven't had any accidental misclicks at all while using it!

There are plenty of RGBs integrated into this mouse with 11 Razer Chroma RGB Lighting Zones, so for those RGB lovers out there, this may be your new baby. The scroll wheel is very smooth and functional, and I like to leave mine in tactile mode for the most part. There are two buttons above the scroll wheel, and of those two, the one located closest to the wheel is the button that controls whether the scroll wheel is in tactile mode or free mode.

The button right above the scroll wheel control is the one that controls DPI Levels, and it defaults to 5 levels: 400, 800, 1600, 3200, and 6400 DPI. I really like having this capability of changing the DPI on the fly whenever you need it to be a little more/less sensitive. The Multi-Function Trigger is also a tool that you can change in the software to lower or increase sensitivity with a press of the button, but just keep in mind you have to hold down the button to keep it activated.

The Multi-Function Trigger is on the left side at the end of the thumbrest. I do have a little bit of an issue using it because of how I hold the mouse, which is a claw style. So whenever I try to hit the trigger, I have to readjust my hand so I can comfortably use it, which can create problems in-game. I just wish they placed it a little closer to where I put my thumb.

The skates on the bottom help with the smooth movement of the mouse, but I have noticed some stickiness when I try and make smaller movements with the mouse. It probably doesn't help that the mouse is a tad bit on the heavy side. Just to be fair, I don't use a traditional mouse pad; I use a full desk pad, so that may not help the matter as well, but I have had mice work really well on it, so it is what it is.

Software

Razor Basilisk V3 profile button

The software that controls the Razer Basilisk V3 is actually two different apps that are combined under the Razer name, which are Synapse & Chroma. They both work in tandem to give you very good control of your device and allows you to customize it to fit whatever you really need.

  • If you run into any issues with this software, you may have to go into repair mode, which will repair it without having to uninstall and reinstall, so it saves you some time. To get there, you have to go into "installed apps" in your computer settings, type the name of the program, or swipe down and find it. Once you find the app, hit the three dots on the far left side, and an option should pop up that asks you to either modify or uninstall. HIT MODIFY. Then a new screen should pop up, which tells you which apps are installed and if you want to repair them. Hit repair!

Synapse:

The Synapse controls the actual functions of the device, from button layout to the sensitivity of the DPI button control, which you can turn on or off, which gives you options to use the DPI controller as a separate button if you like. There is a neat option in synapse that is called Smart-Reel, which automatically changes the scroll wheel from tactile mode to free spin mode if you quickly flick the scroll wheel.

Just so you know, when I first downloaded the software, there was an error where the device wouldn't show up for me to tinker with it. So I went through the steps that I outlined with the bullet on top of this section, and it worked just fine for me. Just so you know, in case you run into the same issues.

This is also where you can change and edit different profiles so that you can flip through them using the bottom button on the mouse. This way, you can have a setting for surfing the web and one for work or whatever else you want to customize your mouse to do.

Synapse is where you can change the Multi-Function Trigger to whatever DPI you prefer, but it is default set at 400 DPI ( I changed mine to 800 DPI). To do this, you have to click on the trigger button on the outline under the tab that has the name of your device, then go to the option on the left that looks like a mouse moving called sensitivity, make sure it is on Sensitivity Clutch. After all that is done, you change the DPI to whatever you want it to, and once you're done, the name on the map should be green with a razer symbol, that's how you know it is saved!

Chroma:

Those 11 Razer Chroma RGB Lighting Zones really come out and play in the Chroma app! This is where you can change the color and the effect that your mouse will look like. You have 16.8 million colors to choose from and a good amount of effects. I have mine set to audio meter so it changes color with the sound of the audio.

In the studio section of Chroma, you have full control of the device's lighting zones so you can mix and match to your heart's content. The customizable options that Razer gives you are one of the best I have ever used. So play around with it and see what you can do, I promise you won't be disappointed with Studio.

However, the Visualizer section of Chroma was giving me issues when I first downloaded it. Whenever I tried toggling it on, it would create a stutter in the software where the Chroma app and mouse would blink on a continuous cycle, like it was turning on/off repeatedly. The only way I was able to make this stop was by repairing it by going into apps and modifying it, look at the bulleted paragraph at the beginning of this section.

The Good & The Bad

Razor Basilisk V3 top buttons

The Good:

  • Software- The software gives you so much control of this device from the RGB lighting zones to the button layout and even more!

  • No Misclicks- The Optical Mouse Switches Gen 2 really do the job, because I haven't had any accidental triggering of the mouse, everything has the right amount of tension that is needed for great control.

  • RGB- The RGB on this mouse, though it is a lot, especially for me, I feel like it is tastefully put on the device so as not to overpower it, but give it a great aesthetic.

  • Skates- The skates help with movement and makes it glide rather smoothly until you get to smaller adjustments.

  • 11 programmable buttons- Gives you enough room to customize the V3 to fit just about any situation.

The Bad:

  • Heavy- The mouse is rather heavy and can cause some issues with hand fatigue and when you're trying to make small, precise movements.

  • A Little Sticky- Even with the skates, when I'm trying to do smaller, more minute movements, the mouse gets a little sticky and the pointer stutters at times.

  • Software Issues- I had some issues with the software, but using the repair option seems to fix the problems; however, having to go through that for the software to work correctly is a pain in the rear.

  • Multi-Function Trigger placement- For my grip style, I have to readjust my hand to use it.

Final Thoughts

Razor Basilisk V3 sideview

The Razer Basilisk V3 does have some issues, however, as I use it, I find that the good features definitely outweigh the bad. The ergonomics of this mouse feels great, and it molds to my hand very well. Though I do wish the trigger was a little closer to my thumb, but that's a smaller issue that may be because of my style of mouse holding.

This mouse gives you the ability to customize it any way you see fit and change profiles with just a touch of a button. Not only that, it has a very sleek look with RGB positioned to be aesthetically pleasing and not overbearing. This mouse would be a great companion to just about any gamer who wants a great mouse that doesn't miss fire and lets you customize it to your taste and what you need to get done!
